Our heritage in LSQ

This project was made possible through SIVET’s “Communo-Inclusion” program. The $5,000 contribution granted under this program enabled CBLS to offer a total of 11 workshops on the following five themes:

  • The art of giving a public speech in LSQ with Daz Saunders, PhD in linguistics
  • The history of educational institutions of Deaf in Montreal with Dominique Lemay, a bilingual teacher LSQ-French from Gadbois school, and Gisèle Gauthier, a former LSQ teacher now retired
  • The Deaf culture with Jules-Philippe Desrosiers, a former Deaf Culture teacher in the Communication and Deaf Studies program
  • The history of Deaf art, with Pamela E. Witcher, a versatile and renowned multi-talented artist
  • The history of sign language with Sonia Dubé, a linguist and a bilingual teacher LSQ-French.

“Nothing about us without us.” The workshops, led in LSQ by Deaf experts, were 100% accessible. Plus, these workshops met the needs of the Deaf community to learn more about their heritage, their roots, and their language. Participants explored these multiple facets of their reality, which allowed them to assert themselves as Deaf individuals and become stronger about their identity, their language, and their self-esteem.
